Eating Disorders

When individuals, who have a problem with their body image, may develop a eating disorder to create their ideal body type. Our self perspective is our opinion of our body (Cash). Eating disorders are disturbances in a person's eating behavior along with psychological problems such as depression (United Stated of America). A person's emotions can effect his or her body image (Learn Basic). People also sometimes create a distorted body image of themselves. Socioeconomic status does not seem to be a significant factor in the rates of eating disorders (Schlundt). Eating Disorders can be broken down in to three categories: Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and EDNOS which is Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (United States of America). 


Anorexia Nervosa

This is an eating disorder where the main characteristic is the restriction of food and the refusal to maintain a minimal normal body weight. This may result in extreme dieting and excessive exercising (United States of America). Individuals who suffer from this disorder see themselves as overweight and will weigh themselves multiple times a day (United States of America). Also, they control the food intake to the smallest detail. 


WARNING SIGNS(United Sates of America):

  • Dramatic weight loss.
  • Refusal to eat certain foods
  • Frequent comments about feeling overweight, despite weight loss.
  • Anxiety about gaining weight
  • Denial of hunger
  • Rigid exercise program
  • Withdrawal from usual friends and activities.
  • Changes in physical and emotional behaviors
  • Irregular menstrual cycle

Bulimia Nervosa

This is when an individual eating excessive amount of food in a short period of time,followed by purging. Individuals can maintain a normal body weight unlike with Anorexia Nervosa (United States of America). Also, the individuals who suffer from this experience shame and guilt (Learn Basic). 


WARNING SIGNS (United Sates of America):

  • Disappearance of large amounts of food in a short period of time
  • Frequent trips to the bathroom after meals
  • Rigid exercise regimen
  • Unusual swelling in cheeks area
  • Calluses on back of hands and knuckles
  • Discoloration of teeth
  • Withdrawal from usual friends and activities.
  • Changes in physical and emotional behaviors.


Binge-Eating

Binge-eating is one type of EDNOS (United States of America) . This disordered is describe as loss of control of eating habits such as excessive or impulsive eating. The individuals who suffer from this disorder are often overweight or obese. Like Bulimia, these individuals feel shame and guilt from it. 


WARNING SIGNS (United Sates of America):

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Eating large amounts of food, even when not hungry.
  • Being embarrassed by the amount of food eaten
  • Finding piles of empty food packages and wraps as well as hidden food stashes of high calorie foods.
